Thomas W. Kornbau
ATK Mission Research Corporation
Chief Engineer

Dr. Kornbau is Chief Engineer at ATK Mission Research Corporation (MRC) in Dayton. He joined MRC in 1985 as a Research Scientist and later became Division Manager of the MRC-Dayton Measurement Division. Dr. Kornbau has been the designer, Principal Investigator, and Program Manager on several Low Observable (LO) projects. His responsibilities include antenna design and development, Radar Cross Section (RCS) measurements, radome design, and antenna/radome integration.

Dr. Kornbau’s Antenna work has largely focused on LO antennas. These antennas incorporated special Frequency Selective Surface (FSS) design techniques. He has led LO antenna projects through all phases: research, development, fabrication, production, testing (radiation and RCS), as well as maintenance/repair. His most recent major effort was on the development and production of Link 16 antennas for the B-2 fleet. Dr. Kornbau also led the development and production of UHF Communications Antennas for the F-117A fleet.

His radome work includes design, fabrication and testing of broad band, dual band, narrow band radomes and angle sensitive spatial filters. Dr Kornbau successfully developed electrically small radomes with FSS elements much smaller than a wavelength.

Prior to joining MRC-Dayton, Dr. Kornbau was with General Dynamics (1977-85) and served as the Principal Investigator on several projects involving the theory, design, and construction of electromagnetic spatial filters employing FSS layers. He was also responsible for signature analysis and helped design and implement computer aided RCS and network analyzer measurement systems.
