RESEARCH RESUME:

Dr. Marhefka is involved in practical scattering and antenna problems. Among the antenna problems he has worked on in the past includes the development of a broadband array for pulse transmission to be used in underground transmission. He also worked on developing two-dimensional models for conformal arrays mounted on the leading edge of the wings of high-speed aircraft.

In addition, he developed techniques to analyze basic scattering structures using modern diffraction theory. This work includes development of approximate theoretical solutions for the volumetric radiation patterns of arbitrary antennas mounted on the fuselage of general type aircraft. He also developed an approximate theoretical solution for the pattern optimization of wing-mounted arrays. Furthermore, he worked on techniques to combine the Geometrical Theory of Diffraction with the moment methods.

He has applied these high frequency techniques to analyze the radiation patterns of and the coupling between antennas in a shipboard environment. Portions of this work have become part of a general-purpose computer code called the Numerical Electromagnetics Code – Basic Scattering Code. This code has been widely distributed to government and industrial organizations throughout the United States and the world in an attempt to make the state of the art techniques available to working engineers and scientists.

He has extended these techniques and developed new solutions for finding the radar cross section of complex scattering bodies. He developed higher order diffraction coefficients to improve the accuracy of prediction. He also used these techniques to do phenomenology studies of how radar objects scatter for target identification purposes. He is the author of a computer code called the Radar Cross Section – Basic Scattering Code, which is distributed to authorized government and United States industries.

He has been a member of a government working-group determining and implementing the requirements for a general geometry package to be used for electromagnetic research in the whole scattering community. He has also been on a Blue Ribbon Panel for the Army studying the antennas for the Comanche and Blackhawk helicopters.

More recently, he has been working with developing new superstructures for ships, specifically; new masts based on modern radome design concepts. This has entailed everything from design of the radome, predictions of their antenna and scattering performance, development of models for test, and consultation on fabrication of the actual structures with the Navy. It has lead to a mast being put on an active ship with the design of a new ship underway. The practical applications of this new work include the analysis of indoor and outdoor wireless propagation models as well as anechoic camber modeling. Also, he is involved with extending FSS designs to infrared. In addition, he is working on new wideband array concepts.
